Auditions: Broadway at the Gardens for A Chorus Line

Broadway at the Gardens, The City of Rancho Cucamonga’s Semi-Professional Musical Theatre Company, will hold auditions to cast its March 2012 production of A Chorus Line.  All those who wish to be in the performance must come to the dance auditions on Tuesday, January 10th at 7:00 pm at the Lewis Family Playhouse in Rancho Cucamonga located at 12505 Cultural Center Drive (the Lewis Family Playhouse is located inside the Victoria Gardens Cultural Center).

All roles in this production are available.  Dancing in the show requires heavy jazz, ballet, and some tap. Those auditioning should wear form fitting dance clothes and ladies should also wear character heels. If asked to attend callbacks on Wednesday, January 11th, performers should be prepared to sing 16 to 32 bars of music preferably from the show and read from the side scripts provided. When young Sara Crewe attends a boarding school in America, she soon clashes with the heartless headmistress.  Despite efforts to stifle her creativity and sense of self-worth, Sara believes that every girl’s a princess.  But that belief is soon put to the test when she receives dreadful news about her father.  Now she must learn the lesson that no one is ever truly alone.

Performances begin Saturday, January 14, 2012 at 7:30 PM and will continue on weekends through February 12, 2012.  Performances are Fridays at 7:30 PM, Saturdays at 2:15 PM (except Opening Night) and 7:30 PM, and Sundays at 2:15 PM.  In addition to the weekend performances, there will be a special Thursday performance on February 9, 2012 at 7:30 PM.  The performance on Saturday, January 28th  at 7:30 PM will feature an interpreted presentation for the deaf.

Advance ticket prices are $14 or $18 for adults and $7 or $9 for children ages 3-11 (no children under 3 are admitted) and can be purchased over the phone with a Visa or MasterCard by calling (909) 335-3037, ext. 21.  Checks can also be mailed to LifeHouse, provided reservations are made far enough in advance.  Tickets may also be purchased in person at the box office, which is open Fridays from 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM and one hour prior to and during show times on the weekends.  Tickets are $1 more the day of the performance.  Group rates are available for groups of ten or more.  Guests are encouraged to reserve seats early as many performances sell out.

Play With Your Food presents the U.S. premier of Too Many Cooks, written by Marsha Kash and Douglas E. Hughes and directed by Laura Robitaille.

It’s 1932 in Niagara Falls, Canada, where the rum-running business is at its peak.  In the aftermath of the Crash, Irving Bubbalowe and his daughter Honey have risked everything they have to open a new restaurant.  When their star, the renowned singing chef Francois LaPlouffe—fails to appear, tonight’s grand opening is suddenly placed in jeopardy.  However, when unemployed chef, Frank Plunkett wanders in looking for work, Honey persuades him to masquerade as the missing LaPlouffe.  The beleaguered Bubbalowe, meanwhile, also has to contend with Chicago gangster Alfonse Feghetti, and his sidekick, who have come looking for an illegal shipment of booze residing in the basement.  In addition, Bubbalowe has to keep at bay the hot-blooded Immigration Officer Veronica Snook, on the trail of the vanished chef, as well as a suspicious, tee-totalling Mountie who is ready to arrest Bubbalowe for both murder and bootlegging.  Madness ensues as Bubbalowe, Honey and Frank create a hornet’s nest of fabricated stories and identities in a valiant effort to save the restaurant*and themselves from both the gangsters and the law. Annie, based upon the popular Harold Gray comic strip “Little Orphan Annie”, with music by Charles Strouse, lyrics by Martin Charnin, and the book by Thomas Meehan is  the story of an 11 year old redheaded orphan girl, optimistic and spunky whose only wish is to find her parents.  A family favorite since it premiered on Broadway in 1977 this production features a talented cast of youth and adults performing such familiar songs as “Tomorrow” and “It’s a Hard Knock Life.”  The cast includes veteran performers Madi Ligtermoet as Annie, Tysa Curry (Miss Hannigan), John Campbell (Daddy Warbucks), Heather Keeney (Grace), Johnny Fletcher (Rooster Hannigan), and Heidi Darling (Lily) and introducing Fatty as the orphan dog Sandy.  Directed by Lissa Supler.

On a cold, clear moonless night in the middle of winter, all is not quite what it seems in the remote, mythical town of Almost, Maine. Witness the remarkable true story of Clara Barton, who not only helped transform the nursing profession amidst the horrors of the Civil War, but also brought the Red Cross to prominence in America.  This moving musical pays tribute to a true American hero!  While this live theater production is highly recommended for home schools, medical training schools and service groups, the general public is also encouraged to attend.

Please note special times:  All performances will be held during weekday mornings; Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, February 7 -  10, 2012.   Performance times are 9:15 AM and 11 AM each day, and will run approximately one hour in length, with no intermission.

Redlands Footlighters will holding auditions for Queen Milli of Galt by Gary Kirkham 7 p.m. Jan. 16 and 17 at the Footlighters The­ater, 1810 Barton Road.  Mel Chadwick will direct the play, which runs March 8-25.

The Duke of Windsor (the future King Edward VIII of England) visited Canada as a young man in 1919.  Two weeks after his death in 1972, an 80-year-old woman from the small town of Galt, Canada, had her tombstone engraved, claim­ing to be his wife. Based on a true story, this is a roman­ticized version of a supposed dalliance between the heir to the British throne and a young schoolteacher. (Read on …)

Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona has a recruitment event coming up in January. If you think you might be interested (or know someone else who might be), contact Ken Lay at ken-lay@sbcglobal.net for more information.

A “standardized patient” is a person who has been trained to accurately and consistently portray a medical patient and participate in a simulated office visit where student doctors ask questions and/or conduct a basic physical exam. Pay ranges from $15-25/hour and the work is open to all ages and ethnicities. Jobs are usually booked days or weeks in advance and are offered based on demographic requirements of individual cases.
