Nick (played by Ian McLean) is a single Italian American young man from New Jersey. His parents have retired and moved to Florida. He still is tied to his family, because he sees both sets of grandparents every Sunday for dinner. These wacky, wonderful grandparents are portrayed by the award-winning, very talented; Thomik Deverien, Catherine DeBrule, Mike Hanrahan and  Heidi Merrigan. This Sunday dinner routine is perfect until Nick announces that he’s been offered a dream job (marketing executive) and is moving to Seattle. This news does not sit well with Frank, Aida, Nunzio, and Emma, and they do their level best to keep Nick around, including bringing to dinner the lovely – and single – Caitlin O’Hare (played by Macie Hanrahan) as bait. The antics that follow in this family comedy are both hilarious and touching. (Read on …)

Feed me, Seymour! Little Shop of Horrors is the next offering from Performance Riverside, opening November 12. The upbeat musical spoof of sci-fi movies is well-known and loved by a wide audience from its successful 1986 film version starring comedians Steve Martin, Rick Moranis, Bill Murray and John Candy.  The stage musical and film versions were adapted by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman from the Roger Corman film, with original screenplay by Charles Griffith.

If the names Alan Menken and Howard Ashman sound familiar, they should: They’re the successful musical duo behind such Disney classics as Beauty and the Beast and The Little Mermaid. This original production, directed by Ashman, with musical staging by Edie Cowan, was critically acclaimed and won several awards including the 1982-1983 New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Musical, the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Musical, and the Outer Critics Circle Award. Howard Ashman wrote, in the introduction to the acting edition of the libretto, that the show “satirizes many things: science fiction, ‘B’ movies, musical comedy itself, and even the Faust legend”.

Mt. San Jacinto College’s Menifee Valley Campus Theatre Arts Department is getting ready to raise the curtain on their fall production Dark of the Moon, by Howard Richardson & William Berney. Set in the Smokey Mountains, this is a dark musical play based on “The Ballad of Barbara Allen” and is just in time for Halloween.

Two worlds collide in this piece, as witches, conjure-folk, and townspeople find themselves in unusual, but always-feared circumstances. “The piece plays on superstitions and deeply held fears/beliefs which compel seemingly good people to do unspeakable things,” according to director Lori Craig Torok. The play brings two moon-crossed lovers together, only to end in personal disaster. (Read on …)
