The Fantasticks is the longest-running production of any kind in the world, and with good reason: at the heart of its breathtaking poetry and subtle theatrical sophistication is a purity and simplicity that transcends cultural barriers. The result is a timeless fable of love that manages to be nostalgic and universal at the same time (MTI.com).
Echoing Pyramus and Thisby and Romeo and Juliet, two fathers build a wall between their properties. But unlike the previous stories, these fathers are feigning a feud in order to ensure their children fall in love, because they know that children always do what their parents forbid. They even go so far as to hire actors to fake a kidnapping so that the young man will make a heroic rescue of the young girl.
Their plan is successful, until it is revealed to the children. The children are disillusioned and decide they need to see more of the world. But, in a unique twist on the Prodigal Son parable, what they think will be exciting turns out to be heartbreaking, and they return to each other with a more mature idea of love, realizing what really matters has been present all along. The production contains a bountiful series of catchy, memorable songs, many of which have become standards.
