Redlands Shakespeare Festival presents Actor’s Workshop Retreat Weekend to be held October 2-4, 2009, at Lawler Lodge in Idyllwild.

THE ARCHEOLOGY OF SHAKESPEARE
offered by Steven Kent
A very active, hands-on session in which exciting and clear techniques will be shown revealing how to uncover the real meaning and intention of the Shakespeare texts. This workshop galvanizes the actor into active work which is profound and immediate. These revealing techniques help establish a Shakespeare working methodology which makes the text accessible to the actor and deepens the actors connection to the audience.
Steven Kent is the director of theatre at the University of LaVerne. He is a professional director, workshop leader, teacher, and activist committed to theatre as an instrument for community and personal transformation as well as progressive social change. He was founder and director of the Company and Provisional Theatres in Los Angeles and has directed productions at the New York Shakespeare Festival, The Manhattan Theatre Club, the Mark Taper Forum, the Los Angeles Theatre Centre, Illusion Theatre, 7 Stages, the Guggenheim Museum, Highways Performance Space, and the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb and Varazdin. Currently, Kent is resident stage director of the Junebug Theatre Project and works with Carpetbag Theatre, A Travelling Jewish Theatre, Roadside Theatre, Artists Confronting AIDS and the Urban Bushwomen. He has received three LA Drama Critics Circle awards, and is a recipient of a major Theatre Communications Group Artists in Residency Grant. He is a member of Alternate ROOTS. The California Educational Theatre Association South recently cited Kent as Outstanding University Theatre Professor of the Year.
BY ANY OTHER NAME: Period Theatre and the Do’s and Don’ts of Conceptualization

A dynamic acting and directing session that will explore and outline a primer for generating reconceptualized period performance pieces. It will focus on thematic continuity and construct within the structure of a reconceptualized play. The workshop will provide a tool for directors, designers, and actors to generate a framework for charting and linking period literature to alternate or contemporary archetypal themes, characters, and settings.
Carey Curtis Smith is an award-winning actor, director, designer, and educator with degrees in Theatre, English and Art History. He has worked for many theatre companies throughout Southern California, including Candlelight Pavilion, Performance Riverside, San Diego Moonlight Amphitheater, Redlands Bowl Summer Music Festival and many more. He is the recipient of more than 30 Inland Theatre League Awards for acting, directing and designing. He has taught theater courses for Vanguard University, the University of Redlands, and Crafton Hills College. Currently he is the head of the exhibits design division for the San Bernardino County Museum, and a guest instructor for the University of Redlands.
LANDING THE ROLE: Audition Preparedness and Presentation

A skills development session that explores the do’s and don’ts of preparing for and performing well at auditions. This workshop explores audition etiquette and techniques, the importance of delivery and style, tips and hints on what casting panels look for, and the best ways for actors to improve their chances of landing the roles they are best suited for.
Steven Sabel is the founding artistic director of the Redlands Shakespeare Festival, and an award-winning director and performer. He has produced and/or directed more than 50 productions, including full-scale musicals, nearly half of the Shakespearean canon, various professional dinner theater productions, and educational theater. He has cast and directed more than 300 different performers in a wide variety of material, period settings, themes, and characters.
