The Murrieta Repertory Theatre proudly present the world premiere of Thomas Trerise’s new comedy, Breakfast and Loathing in Suburbia.

Breakfast and Loathing in Suburbia is a collection of three one-act comedies; each telling a unique story on the challenges facing relationships, and some of the disillusionments of modern-day suburban life.   The three stories occur simultaneously throughout the course of a single day, and the plot of each story is driven by or around the titular object.

Muffin is a witty and poignant comedy which examines marriage in the middle-life years.  The story focuses on Howard and Gloria, a couple in their early fifties who, three months ago, started living alone for the first time in twenty years after the youngest of their three sons, Chuck, moved out of the house.  One morning, Howard wakes up and decides he wants a muffin for breakfast over the eggs Gloria made for him.  This simple decision becomes an all out war of the wills, as Howard fights for his inherent right as a “grown up man” to have a muffin, while Gloria struggles to find her identity as a wife, as opposed to the mother she’s been for over twenty years.  Covering the range of topics from mid-life, menopause, and empty nest, this witty and touching comedy is a true day-in-the-life of a “typical” suburban couple.

Coffee is a dark comedy, served without cream or sugar.  Harriet is a woman who enjoys the simple life; her public library, the arts, a good mystery, and an even stronger cup of coffee. Her life gets a double shot of espresso one morning as a mysterious old man approaches in the local coffee shop, looking for help in killing his wife.  She immediately dismisses the old man away, however, soon afterward Harriet plunges herself and her mild-mannered boyfriend, Glen, into a hypothetical “thought experiment” on how to plan the perfect murder.  When the old man winds up dead that afternoon, Harriet finds herself in the middle of a police investigation, and a moral dilemma: Is justice obeying the law, and leaving it in the hands of “the system”?  Or is justice having the perfect murder plan, and seeking personal vengeance for the moral good?

The last vignette, entitled The Newspaper, is a charming romantic comedy about the laws of attraction.  Gerhardt and Helga are two park regulars in their golden years that enjoy spending their mornings in the park reading the morning newspaper.  Unbeknownst to unsuspecting couples who pass by them, Gerhardt and Helga also enjoy spending their mornings providing relationship advice to couples in need, whether they ask for it or not.  Full of wit and charm, this act examines how opposites attract, and that sometimes the most impassable challenges in any relationship, are merely speed bumps, depending on one perspective.

Breakfast and Loathing in Suburbia is written by local playwright, Thomas Trerise, as a commissioned work for the Murrieta Repertory Theatre. The play is directed by the theatre company’s co-founder, and 17-time Inland Theater League Award-winning actor and director, Coley O’Brien McAvoy.
