This exciting drama based on real-life events of the Puritan purge of witchcraft in 1692 Salem is both a gripping historical play and an allegory for our contemporary society. The story focuses upon a young farmer, his wife, and a young servant-girl who maliciously causes the wife’s arrest for witchcraft. The farmer brings the girl to court to admit the lie – and it is here that the spellbinding course of hypocritical bigotry and monstrous deceit is devastatingly depicted. The farmer, instead of saving his wife, finds himself also accused of witchcraft and ultimately condemned with a host of others.
“Arthur Millers finest work.” states Jim Marbury, who directs the piece. “It’s his masterpiece. This play is about people, just like you, who grapple with some really big questions. At one time or another, we all have our principles tested. In addition, these characters are just simply compelling people.”
As part of Murrieta Repertory American Classic Program, MRT will bring this production to the high school age students in the community for only $1. “it’s exciting to offer up this play to the local students because this is one of the plays these kids have to read anyway, so why not let them in at a very special discount.” says Marbury, “Plus, we assembled some familiar talent that has given such memorable MRT performances in the past!”
“Murrieta Rep has carefully built our reputation as a ‘serious’ theater company on these American Classic Productions,” comments Marbury. “Every Year, we’ve assembled refined performers to portray these characters in our annual flagship production, and it shows. Add that it’s presented in a thrust stage configuration, the audience will be right there in the moment with actors.” The award winning actor and MRT Co-founder Coley McAvoy plays John Proctor, the man at the center of the tale. His wife, Elizabeth Proctor (played by Alisa Lovas) may suffer the ultimate consequence of John’s indiscretion with Abigail Williams (portrayed here by MRT new comer Yvonne Flack).
