The Corona Civic Light opera is now gearing up for our Christmas production of Santa’s Toy Camp, an authorized adaptation of the original play Toy Camp, written by Paul Collette and Gary Fritzen. Located at the North Pole, Santa’s Toy Camp (adaptation by Jenn Curtis) is a school focused on helping some of the toys learn how to be what they are supposed to be. Or, in some cases, learning who they really are and altering their toy characteristics to match their natural talents and personality. Toys that don’t find their place in the world and achieve their true character before Christmas may end up in the toy dump instead of on Santa’s sleigh. Although this play is targeted at a young audience and certainly has a positive message and good moral content, it is not intended to be a “youth theatre” production. An age appropriate cast will be selected based upon talent and your ability to “become” the character/toy. This is a stage musical play and, therefore, most of the roles will require actors that are true “triple threat” talents.
All roles are currently open.
Principal Roles
- Mrs. Grouchstick: Female, Age 35 – 55 Traditional school teacher character. She is actually the school Principal, who is substitute teaching for this special class. Solo singing as well as choral in multi-part harmony required. Extensive dialogue. Little or no dancing required.
- Rover: Male/Female, Age 14 – 25 A southern hound dog who is kind and gentle and trying to learn how to be “man’s Best Friend”. Solo singing as well as choral in multi-part harmony required. Elvis style impersonation a plus. (both vocal and physical movement) Dance skill a major plus. “Southern or Hillbilly” accent needed for dialogue.
- Cool Cat: Male/Female, Age 14 – 30 A 50’s style “greaser” cat. Think “Fonzy” from happy days. Solo singing as well as choral in multi-part harmony required. Ability to move like a “cat” is a must. Good dance skills are required. Significant Dialogue.
- Ted E. Bear: Male, Age 14 – 25 A shy, wimpy teddy bear, with a physical side. Trying to find a way to combine his “Cuddly” side with his rambunctious physical nature. Solo singing as well as choral in multi-part harmony required. Needs to be able to communicate with an audience through “facial expressions” as well as through scripted lines.
- Princess Ann: Female, Age 16 – 30 A frilly princess doll that hates “frilly dresses” A rough and tumble character that loves to make messes and get dirty. Her true character just doesn’t fit her toy persona. Solo singing as well as choral in multi-part harmony required. Ability to project being disgusted, frustrated and stubborn through facial and physical expression, not just words.
- Prima Donna: Female, Age 13 – 25 A ballerina doll that loves music and can feel it in her bones, but unfortunately not in her feet. She just can’t dance. She learns to find a place in the toy world that perfectly fits her talents and her personality.
- Glow Worm: Male/Female, Age 14 – 25 An extremely smart “know-it-all” with a high level of intelligence but limited emotional maturity who is having difficulty figuring out how to “Glow”. When he/she learns to stop thinking and just “feel” it, glowing becomes second nature. Solo singing as well as choral in multi-part harmony required. Good dance skills a plus.
- Toy Soldier: Male/Female, Age 14 – 30 A clueless toy soldier that can’t march and who nervously spouts trivial facts about various kinds of nuts when lost for words. It is obvious to virtually everyone but him that he is destined to be a “Nut-Cracker”, not a child’s toy soldier.
- Jig: Male/Female, Age 14 – 25 A puzzle piece who likes numbers and sees everything in numerical terms. Solo singing as well as choral in multi-part harmony required. Solo singing as well as choral in multi-part harmony required.
- Saw: Male/Female, Age 14 – 25 A puzzle piece who likes words and doesn’t see how numbers have any meaning. Solo singing as well as choral in multi-part harmony required.
- Jack: Male, Age 15 – 30 A “P” stuttering Jack-In-The-Box clown who just can’t seem to PoP out of the box at the right time. He just has no sense of timing. This character spends the entire show in a box that is rolled around the stage by the other characters. He always needs their help, because he can not move on his own. Extensive dialogue.
Supporting Roles:
- Trucker: Male, Age 15 – 30 Leader of the Toy Dump bullies. Gangster/bully character. In key, but not necessarily “Pretty” singing style. Some dance capabilities a plus.
- Dozer: Male/Female 15 – 30 A Plow or bulldozer who is usually bored and usually falling asleep or “dozing” when he/she should be paying attention.
- Digger: Male/Female 15 – 30 Think typical mobster goon or doll.
- Mean Girls: (4+) Female, Age 15 – 30 Mean spirited girls who have already graduated from Toy Camp, but haven’t really gone anywhere. They are snobs and constantly picking on the current class. Very Strong Dancers with good singing talent.
- Elves: (4+) Male/Female, Age ?? – 8 Messengers that come into class to give information to Mrs. Grouchstick. Will consider any age under 8, but must be able to learn and deliver short dialogue with clarity and good timing.
