Play Synopsis:
Arsenic and Old Lace is a black comedy play by American playwright Joseph Kesselring, written in 1939.The play is a farce revolving around Mortimer Brewster, a theatre-hating drama critic who must deal with his crazy family and local police as he debates whether to go through with marrying the woman he loves. His family include two spinster aunts who have taken to murdering old men by poisoning them with arsenic, an uncle who believes he’s Teddy Roosevelt, and a criminally murderous brother who - due to botched plastic surgery to evade the authorities - now looks like horror-film actor Boris Karloff (a self-referential joke, as the part was originally played by Karloff).

Roles:

  • Mortimer Brewster: (Male Lead - 25 to 35)  The slightly neurotic theatre critic and nephew to Abby and Martha Brewster, who most come face to face with his maniac brother, Jonathon.
  • Elaine Harper:  (Female Major Supporting - 25 to 35)  Mortimer’s pretty, independent girlfriend
  • Abby Brewster:  (Female Lead - 50+)  One of the two insane “Brewster aunts,” who believes murdering lonely old men to be an act of charity.

  • Jonathon Brewster:  (Male Lead - 30 to 40)  Mortimer’s evil, maniac brother, who, because of numerous plastic surgeries, bears a striking resemblance to Boris Karloff.
  • Dr. Einstein:  Jonathon’s partner in crime, who hopes that they will be able to turn the Brewster house into an evil laboratory.
  • Teddy Brewster:  The kindhearted brother to Mortimer and Jonathon–who honestly believes that he is President Theodore Roosevelt.

  • Officer O’Hara:  (Cameo)  (Male 22 - 30) The determined police officer who is also an aspiring playwright.
  • Lieutenant Rooney:  (Cameo) (Male 40+)  A police officer who aids Mortimer in his fight against Jonathon.
  • Mr. Gibbs:  (Cameo) (Male 40 +)  A lonely little old man who nearly falls victim to the aunts’ charity.
  • Reverend Dr. Harper:  (Cameo) Father to Elaine Harper; The minister who runs the church next-door to the Brewster house.
