Auditions: Don’t Drink the Water at Chino Community Players
Chino Community Theatre will be holding auditions for the comedy Don’t Drink the Water directed by Christopher Diehl on Monday, December 4th from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Tuesday December 5th from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Auditions will be held at the Seventh Street Theatre, 13123 7th St., Chino, CA 91710. Please call 909-590-1149 for further information or directions.
There are roles for 8 men and 2 women. All roles are open. Here is a breakdown of the types of characters we are looking for:
- Axel Magee…(20’s/30’s) Ambassador’s well-meaning but bumbling son. Left to run the Embassy in his father’s absence, it is his last chance to prove himself. Excellent comedic timing a must.
- Walter Hollander…(40’s/50’s) Loud, overbearing American tourist from Newark, NJ. Probably epitomizes what most Europeans hate about Americans. Family hides out in the Embassy when mistaken for spies. Despite all the bluster, Walter should not be unlikeable. Think Phil Silvers, Paul Lynde or Jackie Gleason.
- Marion Hollander…(40’s/50’s) Walter’s equally loud, but more sensible wife. In many ways the typical 60’s housewife, with the ability to put her husband in his place with a sharp remark. Despite the arguing, there is real love there. She is Alice Kramden to Walter’s Ralph.
- Susan Hollander….(20’s) Young, pretty, slightly rebellious daughter of Walter and Marion. Engaged to be married to a man her father loves, but she doesn’t. She quickly falls for Axel, much to her father’s chagrin.
- Kilroy…(20’s/30’s) Ambassador Magee’s other assistant. He is efficient, organized, dependable - everything Axel is not. He is not happy Axel is left in charge and has a hard time accepting his authority. He will completely unravel by the end of the play.
- Father Drobney…(30’s-50’s) Priest who has been hiding in the Embassy for six years, and has passed the time by learning magic. Also serves as the play’s occasional narrator.
- Krojack…(30’s/40’s) Menacing, vicious head of the Secret Police. He is after the Hollander’s, convinced they are spies.
- Chef…(20’s-50’s) Temperamental and eccentric, he has a very hard time cooking for the Hollanders.
- Ambassador Magee…(50’s/60’s) Hard-nosed and dignified father of Axel. He decides to give his son one last chance to make good.
- Sultan of Bashir…(40’s/50’s) Tall, imposing desert chieftan with dark glasses and beard. His intoxication later in the play provides an escape for the Hollander’s. (This part may be doubled with the Ambassador).
- Burns…(20’s-30’s) Another harried Embassy worker. This part could be a male or female.
